Mercer County, Coldwater police to host active shooter trainings

MERCER CO., Ohio (ADAMS) – The Mercer County Sheriff’s Office will be hosting Active Shooter Training on July 11 & July 12, 2019.

The training will be presented by the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office in conjunction with the Coldwater PD, and will be held at the Coldwater Middle School.

The Mercer County Sheriff’s Office has scheduled two separate (8) hour training days. Each day will have the same training so that departments can send half of their personnel the first day and the other half the next day. The Sheriff’s Office is covering the cost of providing the training.

There will be a short classroom portion of the training that will be followed up with hands on roll playing scenarios involving intruders and victims. They will be utilizing the use of “air soft” guns to help simulate “Force” on “Force” training.

This will be the 5th year for the Sheriff’s Office hosting an Active Shooter Training session in Mercer County. 49 students signed up to attend the class from most of the Law Enforcement agencies in Mercer County.

The Mercer County Sheriff’s Office has held the training at several locations including Marion Locals Schools, Ft. Recovery Schools, Parkway Local Schools, and St. Henry Schools. Saying their hope is to allow all of the officers from Mercer County to attend training in each of the School Districts so that they get an idea of the general lay outs of the buildings that they may be asked to respond to one day.

Officials say that they hope to never have to use the training, but want to be as prepared.
The public may notice an increased police presence in the area of the Coldwater Schools. There will be a large amount of officers in and around the school. The area will be posted with training warning notices and areas of the building will be closed off to the public.
