FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – Looking for a new way to explore Fort Wayne? A young entrepreneur has launched a mobile electric scooter rental business that includes delivery to the customer’s home. Two-Wheel Rental, LLC provides an affordable option for people wanting to explore their city via scooter, according to owner John Bontrager. Customers can rent one or more scooters for a designated day, and schedule delivery and pickup times according to their needs.
Two-Wheel rents by the day or week and delivers its scooters to the customer’s home or chosen location for their convenience. Two Wheel’s scooters can be ridden wherever it is convenient to the customer, keeping in mind that riders are expected to obey all community rules and safety regulations while traveling. Riders can explore their neighborhood trails or the river greenways “up close and personal” while expending little energy. The scooters provide about 40 miles of travel per charge, according to Bontrager, who observes that “People just love ‘em!”
Two-Wheel Rental currently has a fleet of 20 Segway Ninebot Max scooters available and intends to expand capabilities soon by adding 28 new scooters. While most customers rent just one or two scooters at a time, Bontrager says his business once provided 15 scooters for a party, making for a truly unique and adventurous celebration.
Bontrager, who is 29, says he got the idea for his scooter business while visiting with some friends last summer in California. He came home and worked on a business plan with Business Advisor Billie Wunderlich from the Northeast Indiana Small Business Development Center, who helped him scale back his original idea to a more manageable plan. “Billie was great to work with!” he said.
After the arrival of COVID-19, Bontrager also had to adapt his business model to one that would work better with the virus restrictions. He originally had planned to take his mobile scooter rental business to various parks, festivals and communities in Northeast Indiana and rent out his scooters by the hour. But with fewer people being out and about in the parks, and festivals canceled, he instead concentrated on serving Fort Wayne exclusively due to its 120 miles of scenic trails that are conducive to social distancing. He also decided to rent his scooters by the day or week rather than by the hour, as originally planned, which reduces risk of potential exposure to the coronavirus due to fewer interactions with customers.
Bontrager operates Two-Wheel Rental with help from one part-time employee and intends to add another part-time worker when he expands his business next summer. He eventually hopes to further grow his business by offering scooter rentals in other communities besides Fort Wayne, as originally planned.
While Bontrager currently resides and works in Fort Wayne, he comes from LaGrange County, where he grew up in the Amish community. He attended an Amish school through eighth grade and then completed a GED diploma at age 22 before enrolling in college at Purdue University Fort Wayne. He is a 2020 graduate of Purdue Fort Wayne with a degree in business management.
