Indiana lawmakers approve check on governor’s powers

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (ADAMS) – It appears that we continue to be headed for a showdown at the Indiana Capitol.

Lawmakers on Monday approved a plan that would give them some power in managing the state’s emergencies, specifically allowing themselves to come to Indianapolis and have some say in how emergency dollars are spent. It is a check against the governor.

Governor Holcomb has promised to veto the plan, but lawmakers have enough votes to override him. If that happens, the next step is likely a courtroom.

Lawmakers say the idea is not to limit Governor Holcomb but to make sure any governor doesn’t have too much power in a prolonged emergency.
