MIAMI CO., Ind. (ADAMS) – Indiana State Police have arrested a 57-year-old man after troopers found drugs during a traffic stop in Miami County late Tuesday night.
Jeffrey Azbell was pulled over for having an expired license plate and a K9 detected narcotics in the vehicle. He was arrested after troopers found suspected methamphetamine along with suspected narcotics and other prescriptions. Azbell is now facing three felony charges.
Indiana State Police released the following:
A traffic stop on S. Broadway Ave. in Peru resulted in the arrest of a Peru, IN man after troopers discovered drugs.
Last night, at approximately 11:03 pm, Trooper Kegan Kern conducted a traffic stop on a blue Hyundai due to the license plate on the vehicle being expired since 2022.
While speaking with the driver, Jeffrey Azbell, 57, of Peru, IN, Trooper Kern noticed indicators that criminal activity might be afoot and requested assistance. ISP K9 Trooper Andrew Baldwin and his K9 partner Mack, arrived on scene. Trooper Baldwin utilized his K9 to conduct an open-air sniff, which indicated to the presence of narcotics inside the vehicle. A subsequent search of the vehicle discovered suspected methamphetamine, suspected narcotic drugs, and suspected legend drugs. Azbell was arrested and taken to the Miami County Jail.

Possession of a Legend Drug (2 counts)- Level 6 Felony
Possession of a Narcotic Drug- Level 6 Felony
Trooper Kern was assisted on scene by other troopers from the Peru Post, Peru Police Department, and Miami County Sheriff’s Office.
All criminal defendants are to be presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
